• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

    Thoughts on Dream Analysis

    Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Some of the dreams I’ve been having lately seem to really be saying things that could be useful in my own personal development.  I’ve been intrigued by dreams for many many years, and have even at various times attempted analyzing symbols in dreams in order to interpret their meanings.  Recently, this intrigue has become more [...]

Two More Years is Too Many…

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

There comes a time in the life of every graduate student when she or he realizes that another two years of graduate school cannot be endured. There also, surely, comes a time in the life of every graduate student when she or he searches the web for the real scoop on how to write a [...]

    Don’t be Afraid to Suck

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

Don’t be afraid to suck. It’s easier to fix something that’s broken than it is to fill up an empty page. So says Wil Wheaton, in discussing some of the steps he goes through when struggling through a project. Most of these steps are particular things that make him feel ‘stuck’, and many of these [...]

    Poe.h.D

    Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Once upon a thesis dreary, while I pondered, eyes so bleary, Over a many terse and tort(u)’rous volume of old physics lore… Joel Gilmore’s Home » Once Upon a Thesis Dreary Not only is this poem a great version of Poe’s best-known work, but it is also a beautiful ode to the whole thesis-writing process. Do [...]

    Graduate Student as Apprentice

    Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

…[T]o achieve the highest level of expertise — at which one can make original contributions to a field — one needs to go beyond the written word to the tacit knowledge that is contained in a research community. This is the technical know-how and received wisdom that seep into aspirant scientists during their graduate-student apprenticeship… [...]

    Stop-and-go Blogging

    Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I’ve been really wanting to write here, and I even have five posts in progress at the moment (six, if you count this one!) but just can’t bring myself to finish what I’ve been starting. I think it’s because I feel like I have to draw the line at how much time I spend with [...]

    Ode to the Great Masterpiece

    Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Link: Ode to the Great Masterpiece Remember how good it felt to finally be feeling good about the progress in creating the Great Masterpiece of Thesis? Remember how great it felt to really USE that analytic mind melding ideas and knowledge for the Great Masterpiece of Thesis? Remember how guilty you felt realizing the hours [...]

So many time management options, so little time!

    Thursday, February 28th, 2008

“If you don’t have time to DOWNLOAD and use this software then you really need it.” — from the ThinkingRock homepage. I’ve been through a lot of time management software and webware in the past year or so… I’m almost afraid to estimate how much of my time was eaten by such endeavours. I’m trying [...]

    Eclipse epiphany, or lunar lunacy?

    Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

I stood there, gazing at the moon, unblinking in its oranged glow. I had a promise in mind, to myself and for myself. The idea had only sprouted barely an hour or so prior, and it was only getting more potent… and terrifying. But I believe it will work. I’m not superstitious by any means, [...]

Situation drafty: but I’m cool in a good way

    Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

I am in the midst of drafts of so many things, and I know that all I need to do is get them done so that I can move on. I also know that having so many things on the go is distracting me from getting any of them done. But I am feeling very [...]
