• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

  • Don’t be Afraid to Suck

Don’t be afraid to suck. It’s easier to fix something that’s broken than it is to fill up an empty page.

So says Wil Wheaton, in discussing some of the steps he goes through when struggling through a project. Most of these steps are particular things that make him feel ‘stuck’, and many of these are quite frustrating.  However, the mere act of acknowledging these as part of the process has been a boon to his confidence.

Perhaps that’s just what I need to do too, instead of wallowing in blank pagedness. I may not really be stuck after all, but instead there may be mental stages that I need to acknowledge and surpass.  Above all, I need to lose my fear that the final product will suck.  I am not writing the final product yet, I am just writing a draft! So I should just write it, already!

I hereby give myself permission to write a Shitty First Draft.
