• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

    LOLprezdent

    Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I try to avoid politics, LOL cats, and the Olympic frenzy, but this mishmash of the three had me giggling.  I think it’s the expressions on the wife and daughter’s faces that got me.  See all nine in the collection here. Thanks @philgs who retweeted @cascio who retweeted @cmpriest.

Two More Years is Too Many…

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

There comes a time in the life of every graduate student when she or he realizes that another two years of graduate school cannot be endured. There also, surely, comes a time in the life of every graduate student when she or he searches the web for the real scoop on how to write a [...]

    Smelly Old Emails

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

Stop thinking of emails like precious family heirlooms, and start treating ‘em like pints of milk. Perishable, time-stamped milk that becomes a little less fresh every day until it smells kind of funny and just needs to be dumped. Merlin Mann, at Inbox Zero: Better Practices for staying (near) zero. I love Merlin’s use of [...]

Behulsive Compaviour: Text Messy Some comics are so good, they make you laugh out loud.  This one did that to me, but it was a sad laughter, as the topic was about something close to my heart: my cell service provider.  It’s not mentioned by name though, but I found the analogy so very clear! [...]

    Horribly Cheesy, But Fun

    Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I just finished watching Act III (of three.. so far?) of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. I happen to be a fan of cheesy humour, and so the show was totally right up my alley.  I recommend it to anyone who has about 45 minutes to spare, before it is taken off the website at [...]

Once upon a thesis dreary, while I pondered, eyes so bleary, Over a many terse and tort(u)’rous volume of old physics lore… Joel Gilmore’s Home » Once Upon a Thesis Dreary Not only is this poem a great version of Poe’s best-known work, but it is also a beautiful ode to the whole thesis-writing process. MacGyver builds a hot air balloon from scratch

    Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Quote from List of problems solved by MacGyver – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: MacGyver builds a hot air balloon from scratch to escape from a Soviet search party. The balloon was made of homemade super-glue, old clothes, a parachute, welding equipment, a refrigerator, condoms, and metal box. –MacGyver, Season 3: “GX-1” (3×06) I’ve gotta mention that [...]

    Science Hierarchy

    Monday, June 23rd, 2008

xkcd comic #435 – “Purity” Strangely, I’ve been thinking of this very notion a lot recently.  It’s neat how the different sciences operate on different scopes, and how they’re related by this hierarchy.  Awesome! NOTE: There is more to this comic than meets the eye… you must go to the site to hover over the [...]
