• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

    kthxbye

    Monday, September 22nd, 2008

“kthxbye” is the pinnacle of English’s advancement, shortening “All correct, Thank you, God be with you” into seven lowercase letters. Humanity is doomed. From the kthxbye entry at Urban Dictionary. This is actually one instance of Internet Slang that I don’t find repulsive… in fact, I think it’s kinda cute. It reminds me of one [...]

    Returning to Science from Insanity

    Monday, September 15th, 2008

A man who had been in a mental home for some years finally seemed to have improved to the point where it was thought he might be released. The head of the institution, in a fit of commendable caution, decided, however, to interview him first. “Tell me,” said he, “if we release you, as we [...]

Choking Hazard  » Blog Archive  » On Meeting Wil Wheaton This would totally be me if I met Wil. Eventually I [...]

    Monday, September 8th, 2008

A Buddhist monk, visiting New York City for the first time in twenty years, walked up to a hot dog vendor, handed him a twenty dollar bill, and said, “Make me one with everything.” The vendor pocketed the money, and handed the Buddhist monk his hot dog. The monk, after waiting for a moment, asked [...]

End of a PhD Candidate’s Day

    Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Brilliant! Jorge Cham from PhD Comics did it again: he got inside my head, and made a comic of what life’s like as a grad student. It’s so nice to think that I’m not the only one going through this!
