• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

    Venus-Jupiter-Moon Conjunction

    Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

My favourite photo of the Venus-Jupiter-Moon conjunction that peaked just a few days ago was this Astronomy Picture of the Day, which was apparently taken on my birthday! Please click through to read the description, as it has some good links with more explanation of the phenomenon. The site also says that tomorrow’s APOD will [...]

A Nature Calendar, for a Good Cause

    Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

I love having a beautiful calendar. Doesn’t everyone? I, personally, always choose a nature-related theme for calendars, because it just seems right that the seasonal shifts be represented by images from the natural world. This year, I could go one step further: instead of just representing nature on my wall, I could be supporting wildlife [...]

    My First Unicorn

    Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Original 1984 My Little Pony Collection – now available at Hasbro!! The little girl inside my heart is squealing with delight at recognition of her beloved first pony ever, Windy! She’s the one in the middle. The unicorn! *gush!*

    Farewell, Phoenix

    Monday, November 10th, 2008

Phoenix Mars Lander sent its farewell transmission from Mars today: 01010100 01110010 01101001 01110101 01101101 01110000 01101000 <3 (Translation: Triumph and Love.) After that, the only messages in the tweetstream were ones labelled as coming from Phoenix mission ops, explaining that “Phoenix is no longer communicating with Earth.” Poor little droid! R.I.P. I’m actually teary-eyed now… although I guess I knew [...]

    Twittering Plant

    Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The ThinkGeek Plant Twitter Kit looks like the answer to almost all of my struggles with houseplants! The only thing missing is the option for it to sense if my cat is trying to eat it. Maybe in version 2.0?

    Future Voters are Going Green

    Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

They probably think their votes won’t change anything, but if enough people do go vote it will change things. I’m glad to hear that the youth of Canada are gearing up to take their voting duties with pride. In the mock election for school-aged kids, Greens tied the Conservatives, which I think says something very [...]

    F!!k Strategic Voting

    Friday, October 10th, 2008

I can’t help but agree with this Green Party ad.  I also think the NDP should join the Green Party.  Jack Layton would make a great Prime Minister though, especially if he had the Green Party behind him.  (My riding tends to always vote NDP for the federal election, so I won’t be hurting the [...]

    Politicians as Star Wars Characters

    Monday, October 6th, 2008

Amusing U.S. politics thread going on at Fark. This one I chose surely betrays my geekiness… but perhaps other people will find other examples they find funnier! Go look!

    Death Star Pumpkin

    Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Of course, Star Wars Pumpkins will catch the attention of geeks like myself! This one in particular totally has me in awe! I’m not yet sure what I’m doing for my pumpkin this year, but I sure expect to have fun with it!
