• Who am I?

I am Qrystal, a physics grad student who enjoys writing: for herself, or to help other people learn things. When I am done my degree, I'll finally be able to allow myself to start following my desire to write and tutor and spread my joy of understanding physics.

Twitter’s New Retweets: a proposal for change

    Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Here is the feedback I just sent to twitter about their new retweet feature: The new retweet feature has a lot of potential, but it’s being overshadowed by the fact that it isn’t the same as the organic retweeting that emerged from how we use twitter.  It seems the main problem is that people expect [...]

    Accepting twitter changes

    Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

…a new [twitter] feature which will give folks far more control over what they see from the accounts they follow. This will be a per-user setting and it will take a bit longer to put together but not too long and we’re already working on it. — From the Twitter Blog: “We Learned A Lot”. [...]

In support of CJAM, University of Windsor’s campus radio station

    Saturday, March 7th, 2009

CJAM is in trouble, and they have been asking their listeners to write to CRTC to express their support and love for CJAM. I was reminded of this today by @jodilicious, and also reminded that the deadline for expressing my concern is Monday… so I sat down and wrote the following letter immediately. I love [...]

    Good Choice of President, Neighbour!

    Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Even in the most trying times, amid the most difficult circumstances, there is a generosity, a resilience, a decency, and a determination that perseveres; a willingness to take responsibility for our future and for posterity. This is a quote from President Obama’s Address to Congress, one I found particularly inspirational. Doesn’t he make you want [...]

    Twitter Haiku Thieves

    Monday, February 16th, 2009

Today, I finally got around to reporting to Twitter Support the plagiarism of haiku that is occurring on twitter. Below is the content of the support request I sent, with a bit of extra emphasis added for better readability here. I (and many others) have been concerned about a user by the name of @haikutwaiku [...]

    An End to Worn-Out Dogmas?

    Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address – NYTimes.com Is it any wonder that so many people worldwide absolutely love what Obama represents? Even if someone else [...]

    Twitter as a hangout

    Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Twitter, as it turns out, is a bar. It’s a bar. It’s the local neighborhood bar/cafe thing where you hang out. … Why do you hang out in your neighborhood bar/cafe thing? Because it’s your local. It’s your place. It’s where your friends are. It’s where you make new friends. It’s where you go because [...]
