• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

  • Self-reinforcing Success

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

A great weakness has been festering in me for too long now: I am very bad at completing things.  I have great intentions, great directions, great plans, great ideas, but almost none of them get implemented.  What’s worse is that each failure (perceived or actual) reinforces the mindset that causes it. Cause and Effect I’ve tried to [...]

    Analyzing my procrastination

    Saturday, July 19th, 2008

I’ve been doing it again: procrastinating madly. The way it seems to happen without my awareness is completely unnerving, and I’m really starting to feel the urge to make it stop. But how? I seem to be addicted to being happy-go-lucky, paying no attention to what I’m doing, just existing and not thinking about it. [...]

    What “Not To Do” Today

    Friday, April 4th, 2008

The “Not To Do” List reminds me of my vices so I stay on track. I woke up this morning with this haiku in my head. Or rather, I half-awoke and tried to awaken the rest of my mind by pondering the haiku that I was going to twitter when I started work for the [...]

So many time management options, so little time!

    Thursday, February 28th, 2008

“If you don’t have time to DOWNLOAD and use this software then you really need it.” — from the ThinkingRock homepage. I’ve been through a lot of time management software and webware in the past year or so… I’m almost afraid to estimate how much of my time was eaten by such endeavours. I’m trying [...]

The Fall of the Procrastimonster (Interlude)

    Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

The Procrastimonster stumbled groggily towards our heroine, his breath steaming in the cold morning air. Our heroine stood her ground calmly, keeping her eyes fixed on the lumbering beast. When he was close enough that she could smell his rank odour, she casually drew her weapon and inspected it. Flashing him a smile, she brandished [...]

The Fall of the Procrastimonster (Prelude)

    Saturday, October 27th, 2007

The battle against the Procrastimonster was not going well. Every potential weapon the heroine tried ended up doing more to keep the monster alive than to help destroy it, but she was very actively analyzing what went wrong.. or more precisely, how to make it go right. It seemed that the weapons were either not [...]

    To do, or Todoist…

    Thursday, October 11th, 2007

I am pretty sure that what I hate most about making decisions is the possibility of being wrong. I’ve been worrying today that my choice of Task Management App might have been the wrong choice, but I can’t quite put my finger on why. Every specific reason I’m coming up with isn’t quite right, because [...]

Could this Productivity System be “The One”?!

    Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

I’ll be the first to admit that I understand all the danger of mucking around with my productivity system, because I really should just be using it to Get Things Done. But when it just ain’t working, it just ain’t working. I know my mindset has been improving, and I really am trying to just [...]

    Just another Manic Monday…

    Monday, October 8th, 2007

I am resisting the urge to treat today like a holiday, even though it is one. My husband works across the border, and thus gets a Thanksgiving holiday in November instead of October, and we usually go travelling that long weekend… which means I shouldn’t really take a holiday now AND then. So, chop-chop, go [...]

    Harnessing my Momentum

    Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

I did something yesterday I’ve been gearing myself towards for quite some time: I went to campus to do work. I’ve known that working from home doesn’t always work, but trying to drag myself out of the house doesn’t always work either. So yesterday, I actually hitched a ride with my husband and got to [...]
