• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

  • Good Choice of President, Neighbour!

    Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Even in the most trying times, amid the most difficult circumstances, there is a generosity, a resilience, a decency, and a determination that perseveres; a willingness to take responsibility for our future and for posterity. This is a quote from President Obama’s Address to Congress, one I found particularly inspirational. Doesn’t he make you want [...]

    An End to Worn-Out Dogmas?

    Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address – NYTimes.com Is it any wonder that so many people worldwide absolutely love what Obama represents? Even if someone else [...]

    Future Voters are Going Green

    Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

They probably think their votes won’t change anything, but if enough people do go vote it will change things. I’m glad to hear that the youth of Canada are gearing up to take their voting duties with pride. In the mock election for school-aged kids, Greens tied the Conservatives, which I think says something very [...]

    F!!k Strategic Voting

    Friday, October 10th, 2008

I can’t help but agree with this Green Party ad.  I also think the NDP should join the Green Party.  Jack Layton would make a great Prime Minister though, especially if he had the Green Party behind him.  (My riding tends to always vote NDP for the federal election, so I won’t be hurting the [...]

    Politicians as Star Wars Characters

    Monday, October 6th, 2008

Amusing U.S. politics thread going on at Fark. This one I chose surely betrays my geekiness… but perhaps other people will find other examples they find funnier! Go look!

    Dollar Calamity

Thanks @Lodewijkvdb for tweeting this link.

    Green Party FTW!

    Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Let me start by saying that I’ve never been interested in politics. Apathetic would be more like it, until I started paying attention and getting disgusted, which then made me want to revert to apathy again. Unfortunately, there is no going back: once you know something, you can’t un-know it. All that was left for [...]

    LOLprezdent

    Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I try to avoid politics, LOL cats, and the Olympic frenzy, but this mishmash of the three had me giggling.  I think it’s the expressions on the wife and daughter’s faces that got me.  See all nine in the collection here. Thanks @philgs who retweeted @cascio who retweeted @cmpriest.
