• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

Of course, Star Wars Pumpkins will catch the attention of geeks like myself! This one in particular totally has me in awe! I’m not yet sure what I’m doing for my pumpkin this year, but I sure expect to have fun with it!

The Economic Meltdown to a PhD Candidate

    Category: Life. Tags: .

I guess I have been wondering if I should be concerned about the economic meltdown. Good thing I found this handy decision chart!   Here is the transcript of the interaction I had with the chart:

[From the decision chart] Are you a grad student?
    [Me] Yes, yes I am.
    [Chart] You [...] Continue Reading…

    Lack of Funding in Science

If lack of funding drives our most promising young people away from careers in research, the long-term damage to science could be significant,” Finneran said. To prevent this, he said, scientists may have to learn how to fight for what research dollars they can get.
U.S. Bailout May Set Back [...] Continue Reading…

My jaw literally dropped and hung open for a few moments while this notion sunk in: this is the Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device. Yes, it actually speaks in the voice of KITT (William Daniels); and yes, I would seriously consider buying this because yes, I grew [...] Continue Reading…

I’ve just added a new comic to my “Amusement” feed: The Joy of Tech comic… laughter is the best tech support. I was hooked, from just this one comic, well … and the title of the comic … and the fact that the whole site is about Geek Culture…

    ANyways, [...] Continue Reading…

    Green Party FTW!

Let me start by saying that I’ve never been interested in politics. Apathetic would be more like it, until I started paying attention and getting disgusted, which then made me want to revert to apathy again. Unfortunately, there is no going back: once you know something, you [...] Continue Reading…

    Flocking to twitter

Posted by Qrystal on September 23, 2008 at 19:48.
    Category: Miscellany. Tags: twitter.

We’ve all seen a flock of birds move as one around an object. How can they move around that object and be so choreographed? One bird watches another bird’s shoulder and knows to stay a few feet apart. There’s an initial awkwardness, but it’s a new way for humans [...] Continue Reading…

    kthxbye

“kthxbye” is the pinnacle of English’s advancement, shortening “All correct, Thank you, God be with you” into seven lowercase letters. Humanity is doomed.
From the kthxbye entry at Urban Dictionary.

This is actually one instance of Internet Slang that I don’t find repulsive… in fact, I think it’s kinda cute. [...] Continue Reading…
