I’m totally in awe of this image every time I come back to the Wikipedia article on Special Relativity.
This animation shows how events in spacetime (the background dots) at various distances (horizontal axis) appear at various times (vertical axis, ticking by at a constant rate) to the observer (whose trajectory in spacetime is passing through the centre of the image). The observer’s speed relative to the background events is given by the slope of the trajectory:
- straight upwards means relatively stationary
- diagonal means the velocity is approaching the speed of light
- velocity is only along one axis: think of it as “leftwards” and “rightwards” when viewing this image.
