• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

  • Love is Fundamental

Cats can teach us a lot about love. I see it in my cats’ eyes: they know what it means to love, and they know that I love them back. They understand what I’m telling them when I kiss them on their foreheads, and they know what they’re telling me when they kiss my forehead or nose in return. I try to tell them that I understand, by always saying “Thank You” or “I love you too”, but I’m pretty sure they understand.

There’s all sorts of wonderful feelings in these interchanges .. comfort, trust, appreciation, acceptance. In truth, it amazes me that we have this connection, that we can share our affection for one another. I think of my cats as my friends, rather than “pets” that I “own”… it almost makes more sense to say that they own me, and they pay me for my services with their affection.

I find myself wondering just how fundamental Love is. It feels like such a pure, beautiful concept, and so important for life .. I mean, think of procreation, and nurturing, and how it makes so much sense that these things be done with Love. Happiness is nourished by Love; isn’t it bizarre that we have chemical reactions in our brains that result from the Love we feel from others and the Love we feel for ourselves? There must be more to Love than meets the eye.

I have recently wondered if, in fact, evolution is driven by the force of Love. Evolution has long been described as a result of adaptation to the environment; but the changes are genetic, and thus it is not the life form itself that experiences the improvements but its offspring. I wouldn’t be surprised if the life forms that express love for their offspring have higher rates of evolution. I’m certain that, at very least, Love improves the environment in which a life form grows, resulting in greater resilience and longer life; this in turn gives the offspring a greater time in which to affect its own offspring in the same way, thus improving the race as a whole.

Of course, Love is even more basic than that, because it can be shared between members of different species; so not only between us and our pets, but between an animal and the food it eats, between a plant and the tree that provides adequate shade… This is often called symbiosis, but I call it common sense. I often wonder if, perhaps, waves of Love could bring everything into harmony; maybe the Earth can be saved, after all.

It is because of all of this that I feel the need to spread Love, and to encourage others to join me on my quest. It is quite simple, because nothing needs to be said or actively done. We just have to feel the Love directed outwards from ourselves. This can be done by just meaning it when we smile, and when we say “thank you” for something. When appreciating someone’s art or speech or the way they look or the things they do, appreciate it with an extra burst of Love … genuine and pure, independent of all other emotions. This is all done internal to ourselves, but without even knowing it, the Love energy affects and uplifts the target. When giving an external expression of sincere appreciation, the Love energy is funnelled even more easily towards the target. We just have to give it freely, as if we have a bottomless supply; it doesn’t take long to notice that there really is no limit to the amount of Love that can be given, not when it’s given in such a pure state.

I am of the opinion that the world is actually in trouble. This is a way we can all help. Join me! :)

(This blog entry was the only thing I submitted to my first blog at Blogger. Years later, I came to WordPress, and liked what I had written so much that I couldn’t abandon it….!  I edited it a little bit on July 8th, 2009, but stopped when I realized I really just want to write more on this subject.)
