• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

I just had to post this limerick, because I found it hilarious.. and because I want to play with WordPress’ ability to handle LaTeX expressions.

    [tex]\int_{1}^{\sqrt[3]{3}}t^{2}dt\cdot\cos\frac{3\pi}{9}=\ln\sqrt[3]{e} [/tex]

(Hint: If you “speak math”, just say the expression out loud and it will fairly easily fall into the rhyming scheme of a typical limerick. If you don’t “speak math”, I’m sorry, there really isn’t anything for you here! At least, not until I provide a transcript of it… or someone else does, in the comments on this!)

(Edit: WordPress.org does not have the native handling of LaTeX that WordPress.com does, so I had to find a plugin to handle it instead.)

here’s my try – rhyme but no rhythm:

the integral from one to the cube root of three
of the function tee squared dee tee
      times the cosine
      of three pi over nine
equals the natural log of the cube root of ee.

Very close! :) Switch the ideas of the first two lines, and it flows an itty bit better! ;)

A few other minor tweaks can get the rhythm into the limerick syllable pattern of 3, 3, 2, 2, 3…

I still giggle when I look at this! ;)

      Here’s a version with rhythm:

Int. from one to the cube root of three
Of the function T squared delta T
      Then times by the cosine
      Of three pi over nine
to get ln of the cube root of ee.

Oh NO! I knew my LaTeX plugin for mathstuff wasn’t working, but I forgot that it affected my personal blog too! Whoooooops!

To make up for it, I’ll share how I start the limerick:

      Integrate t squared dt
from one to the cube root of three…

…but that’s all I’ll say because I can’t read LaTeX markup very well. I guess I need to fix or replace this plugin soon! Dang!
