• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

Thumbs-upToday is “Good People Day” (GPD08), pass it on!!!

I’ve always liked the term “Good People,” especially in sentences like: “He’s Good People.” It’s as if there is something bigger about the idea than simply that the person is good to others, or does specific good deeds, but that the person is genuinely worthy of being called “Good People”.

And so, in honour of this day, I am not going to single out any specific Good Person, because I want to emphasize the bigger picture. We should all be striving to be Good People, and a day like today is a great opportunity to think about what it takes to be Good People.

    Good Intentions

I know the ubiquitous “they” have a saying about good intentions, but I don’t like how that saying makes it sound like good intentions aren’t worth the effort, or worse, that the good intentions are the cause of bad things. Ouch! Well I think that good intentions are a crucial part of Good People, and that’s why I’ve started my discussion with this point. Good People surely have the best of intentions, and even if they don’t work out, they’re still Good People for trying.

    Good Attitude

Good People are great to be around, because they’re not likely going to bring you down with complaints or big heavy sighs of discontent. This attitude is contageous, and that in itself is sorely needed in society. If we could all keep our chins up and our attitudes congenial, we would all be much better off: more resilient, more motivated, and more appreciated.

    Good Deeds

I know I said above that “Good People” means more than just the deeds they do, but the deeds are still a very important part. Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you, right? Help others in need, support others who are feeling down, and of course, appreciate others who are doing good deeds so they continue to spread the goodness around. Volunteer, donate, plant trees, recycle, smile, and just all around, be Good People. Yeah!

    Good Day

I’m sure there’s more to say about what makes good people “Good People,” and I’d love to hear about it in comments! I’m also going to be checking in at the twitter tweme tagged GPD08, as well as the comments on the facebook event I created for this day.

With that, I wish everyone a Happy GOOD PEOPLE DAY!!!! WOooHOoo!
