Update:

On day 15, I took his cone off. I did it right after he ate breakfast, knowing that his instincts to clean himself after eating would kick in, and that it would be good for him to clean up.

There was only one stitch left by this time, and the wound looked to be almost totally healed. I was fully prepared to remove the last stitch, but it seems he figured out a way to get it out himself, the clever little bugger.

The wound looks really nicely healed, though he'll surely have a scar. He's not being as much of a suck lately as he was when he had the cone on, but he's still a snuggler, although it's been too hot lately to snuggle for long. He's eating fine, drinking water fine, and all that good stuff.

I'm convinced he'll live happily ever after, damnit! :P

Minor update:

We're now on day 12, and the vet said we could remove the stitches in "10 to 14 days". We've removed two so far, since they had loosened and were easy to remove. Interesting "fishing-line" kinda material, the stitches are made from! (I've never had stitches, myself, so I didn't know!) We'll be taking out the rest of the stitches slowly, trying to make sure it's not done "too soon".

We are not taking off the cone until well after the stitches are out. We don't want to risk him irritating the healing wound to the point of it opening again! Although I did take it off him one day to let him, uh, clean himself. When he started messing with the stitched paw though, I told him no, no, and no again, and then put the cone back on. I wanted him to know that the cone is there for a reason, and not just because I'm a mean mommy. :P
