• Who am I?

I am Qrystal; or at least, that's my dot-name! Har har. (My name is really Crystal, but that's not as internet-searchable; hence, switching the C for the little-used letter Q.)

I am here because I enjoy writing. I do this mostly for myself, but I also have a passion for helping others learn things from the things I write. Now that I am done my Ph.D. in Physics, I am stepping away from academic research so that I can indulge in some creative ways to share my knowledge and inspire the appreciation of scientific thinking in others. I am also working as a tutor, which is one of the jobs I've most enjoyed doing in my life so far.

…a new [twitter] feature which will give folks far more control over what they see from the accounts they follow. This will be a per-user setting and it will take a bit longer to put together but not too long and we’re already working on it.

    Relativity and its non-paradoxes

The Clock Paradox illustrates how relativity theory does indeed contain inconsistencies that make it scientifically problematic.
So says Dr Peter Hayes, a senior lecturer in politics (yes, politics), as quoted in an article at Science Centric entitled
    “Has Einstein failed physics?”

I am getting really sick and tired of people trying to [...] Continue Reading…

I just found wrongcards: ecards that are wrong for every occasion and I really, really think that this particular one is sending me a very powerful message. I’m just not sure what it is…

Many of the cards here actually made me want to send ecards to some friends [...] Continue Reading…

    Loopholes in quantum entanglement?

We have been told that experiments agree with all the predictions of quantum theory, including those that involve the impossible – the Bell test experiments, that are supposed to show totally incomprehensible effects of separated particles on each other.

    The glass, to a realist

Posted by Qrystal on April 8, 2009 at 23:30.
    Category: Advice. Tags: .

So much thought goes into how and the why, the half full or the half empty – that people completely lose interest in one key fact. That the glass isn’t only half full or half empty – the glass is there. Grab hold of it. Drink when you’re thirsty. [...] Continue Reading…

    My Teaching Philosophy

I prepared this writeup for my teaching portfolio, which I needed to submit along with a nomination I was honoured to receive for a GA/TA Award for Educational Practice.

Also in this package, I had to include letters from students willing to support my nomination, and the ones who did [...] Continue Reading…

CJAM is in trouble, and they have been asking their listeners to write to CRTC to express their support and love for CJAM. I was reminded of this today by @jodilicious, and also reminded that the deadline for expressing my concern is Monday… so I sat down and [...] Continue Reading…

Link: How To Mend Jeans with a Patch

We have jeans that we’re *this* close to replacing — but that wouldn’t be very green of us, now, would it? Nor economical! I can’t believe it took me this long to search for the way to mend jeans, but [...] Continue Reading…
